Happy Holidays, End of the Year Note, and a Special Surprise

First off, I want to wish everyone the happiest of holidays and hope that all of you can enjoy time with the ones closest to you.  It seems like the season went by awfully fast this year, which didn't allow much time for writing, but on Thursday, it's back to business for me.

I also want to take a moment to reflect on the past year.  2013 marked the beginning of my career as a published author, and I have been very pleased with the results.  Although I haven't sold a million copies or made a six figure deal with a publishing company, I have published two books this year as well as wrote an additional one that I am submitting for publication early next year.  I have all of you to thank for this.  I would not be sitting here this evening writing this if you weren't, so my sincerest thanks are with you, and cheers to an even more prosperous 2014.

Also, I promised you guys a treat earlier this month, and now the time has finally arrived.  Under the bonus material tab on the website, you will find a short story that I had published in my university's literary magazine entitled "The Fame."  I am eager to share it with all of you as I plan on turning it into a full-length novel eventually and would love to get your feedback.  Please leave comments as you wish and thanks in advance.

Again, I thank you all and would like to wish you happy holidays and a great 2014!

Update

Hi, guys!  Sorry it's been so long.  I never knew freshman year of college was going to be so crazy.  The good part is the first semester is almost over now.

One good thing to note is the reason I haven't been able to update is because I've been writing.  This year, as you might know, I participated in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) for the first time.  I was able to successfully reach the goal of 50,000 words (I actually ended the month with over 58,000 words.  The novel, Vegas, is related to the Love, Windy City Style series, and one of the characters will be introduced in Ideal Hero, which I am still working on.  I'm wrapping up Vegas since I'm almost finished with it, anyway, then I will be back to work on Ideal Hero full-time, which will probably put the release date for Ideal Hero in the spring of 2014.  I am going to be entering Vegas to some traditional publishers, so I will keep all of you posted on that.

A fun side note: this semester, Nolos, the literary magazine here at my college selected a short story I wrote to be included in their fall 2013 issue.  For all of your enjoyment, I will be posting that short story (which may or may not become a full-length novel, hint, hint) as a Christmas treat for all of you.  Yes, I promise you there is a sexy hero.

Thanks to all of you for your continued support and I will be sure to hopefully keep all of you better updated in the future.

Details for Love, Windy City Style #3

I hope all of you are enjoying Private Dancer, and I feel that now is the appropriate time to announce the plot details and stars of the third novel in the Love, Windy City Style series, which I have decided to call Ideal Hero.

The plot goes as follows:

Jennifer Alexander is nothing like the heroines she writes about in her romance novels.  She's not blonde-haired, model-thin, or flirty enough to get the attention of the type of man she dreams of.  So, she's resigned herself to the fact that she will likely never find her perfect man and will simply have to spin stories that satisfy her fantasies.  What she doesn't anticipate is the sexy FBI agent who shocks her with his revelations.

Alex Slade is the man Jennifer has spent her entire life dreaming of.  He's tall, muscled, sinfully sexy.  He's also the type of man who wants a woman like Jennifer.  For years, he's been married to his career and tried to shove his unsuccessful love life into the past.  Now that he's met a woman that he can actually relate to, though, he decides to take a chance.  As a relationship blossoms between them, however, ex-lovers and one partner's lack of self-confidence might just tear them apart...

Thoughts from a Hopeful Romantic: The Master of Suspense and the Art of Romance

Alfred Hitchcock is no doubt one of the greatest directors to ever make his mark on the silver screen.  When one thinks of him, several films likely come to mind: Psycho, Rear Window, The Birds, To Catch a Thief, Vertigo.  While all of those films have suspense that leaves us on the edge of our seats just waiting for that all-important climactic moment, those films also have one key element in common.  Every one of them features a romance, no matter how minor it might seem to the plot.

Hitchcock’s films always fascinate me because many of them feature not only moments that scare the hell out of you but also because the romances in them are hot and memorable.  It is no more obvious than in two classic Hitchcock films I’ve already mentioned: Rear Window and To Catch a Thief.  Ironically, both feature “Hitchcock’s blonde” Grace Kelly in two of her most iconic roles, and she is the object of the heroes’ desires in each film.  While Rear Window is primarily a suspense film with a dash of romance thrown in, To Catch a Thief is purely a romantic thriller, as the chemistry between Grace Kelly and Cary Grant sears the screen with double entendres that make women shiver in delight.  Personally, I think the romances in these films are two of the best in cinema history.  Yes, right up there with Casablanca.

Even though Hitchcock’s films are not marketed as such, the romances in his films usually do play a key role in whatever mystery the characters are trying to solve.  Take Rear Window for example.  While it might seem that Jeff’s (James Stewart) main goal is to find out what’s going on in the rear apartment, his relationship with Lisa Fremont (Grace Kelly) is also a parallel within the story.  Jeff constantly alludes to marriage as an unhappy institution, as represented by the neighbors across the way who constantly quarrel.  Still, as the disappearance of Mrs. Thorwald, the neighbor’s wife, starts looking more like murder, the relationship with Jeff and Lisa seems to grow stronger as they bond over trying to solve the case.  I’m not going to give away the resolution of the film, but one can assume it is favorable to the couple.

Hitchcock’s inclusion of romance is a relief in a way for the mounting tension coming from the mystery within, or in the case of such films as Psycho, is the reason for the mystery of the story.  In the film, Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh, steals $40,000 so that she and her lover can get married.  The tension at the beginning of the film is the cause of this, although after the infamous shower scene there is a definite shift.  Still, romance is a distinct element to the film because it allows it to happen in the first place.

If many of Hitchcock’s films were books (which many of them were prior to him buying the rights), most would say they were straight-up thrillers.  However, because of the romantic elements, they would likely veer toward more of a romantic suspense novel.  The heat between the two leads often burns as hot as their desire to find the answer to the mystery in their particular film, making it a delight for any film fanatic.  One of Hitchcock’s heroines once crooned, “Ever had a better offer in your whole life?  One with everything?”  It could easily describe Hitchcock films.  They have everything, even something for the hopeful romantic in everyone.

Love, Windy City Style Book 2: Title and Synopsis

I know I've been teasing that there would be a sequel to HIH for a while now, and I am finally going to put you out of your misery and tell you about my new book that will be out later this year.  It will be called Private Dancer, and it is the arresting tale of two characters familiar to readers of HIH: Jake Bradley and Natalie Warner.

Jake Bradley has spent most of his adult life living on the edge in life and love.  He spends his days as the editor-in-chief of several magazines at Sinclair Publishing and spends his nights in bed with socialites and models.  However, he is stopped dead in his tracks by a mysterious woman dancing for money...

Natalie Warner knows Jake is way out of her league from the first time she meets him.  Her sleazy world of pole dancing and lecherous men is miles from his weekly society column mentions and playboy lifestyle.  Still, she can't get the sandy-haired businessman out of her head.  So, not wanting to get too attached, she propositions him with a no-strings-attached fling.  However, as the chemistry burns hotter between them and the collision of their worlds forces her to make a life-changing decision, it becomes more difficult to keep their feelings out of the equation...

Stay tuned for more updates and a cover reveal coming soon.

Hell in Heels has officially been released to Amazon Kindle.  I had some technical difficulties with Smashwords, so I am going to work on that edition today so that my book will be available to Nook readers very soon.  Also, do to unforeseen circumstances, my book will not be available through the Apple Store or Kobo Reader.

Here is the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Hell-Heels-Windy-Style-ebook/dp/B00CHF6O9C/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1366718942&sr=1-1&keywords=hell+in+heels

Thanks to all who buy HIH today and please take the time to leave a review.  For a self-published author, that is the way a book gets noticed.  Happy release day, and enjoy HIH!

Hell in Heels Teaser #2

Just to get everyone through the next nine days, I'm going to post a teaser from Hell in Heels.  It will be available on April 23rd for all e-reading devices.  Enjoy!
***

By ten to eight, Nathan was in the lobby, leaning against the wall beside the elevators.  Almost on cue, Amy strolled in.  Damn, she looked good.  Maybe it was his just that he hadn't seen her, but he felt she looked extra-tempting in her pale rose blouse, gray skirt, and pastel pink heels.  When their eyes met, she grinned, her cute dimples peeking out.  She looked happy to see him.  He exhaled deeply, trying to calm himself as she approached him.
Nathan nodded toward the elevator.   “Want to ride up with me?”
            Amy smiled and shrugged.  “Sure.”
Nathan led her to an open elevator and they stepped inside.  As the doors closed and he pressed the button for the eighteenth floor, they realized they were the only ones in it.  For a few seconds, he nervously tapped his foot but it didn’t take long for him to relax.
Nathan looked over Amy’s outfit again, in pure disbelief that a woman who dressed as simply as she did could look so stunning.   “You look good.”
Amy glanced at Nathan and exhaled audibly.  “Thank you.”
Nathan caught a whiff of Amy’s perfume and was aroused almost instantly.  This wasn’t normal.  He could always keep his cool around women, even if he was highly attracted to them.  He gripped the bar beside him, striving for control.  This petite little architect had turned his world upside down.  He wasn’t sure he liked it, either.
Nathan glanced over at Amy and noticed that she was biting on her lip and her hands trembled.  He had a feeling that she’d noticed the effect she’d had on him below the belt.  Damn it, he felt like some type of pervert.  He smelled a girl’s perfume and he got hard?  What was wrong with him?
However, the little smirk Amy offered him shortly afterward reassured Nathan.  He still wasn’t proud he was sporting an erection that anyone could see, but the fact that she didn’t seem to think less of him made him feel a little less embarrassed.
He wasn’t sure what happened in that moment when their gazes locked.  It was almost as if their souls were bared to one another, and all of their wants, needs, and desires could be seen by the other.  Prior to it, they at least had a shot of keeping their feelings for each other at bay for the time being.  However, the passion and frankly, the pure lust in their eyes killed all hopes of that.
Nathan dropped his suitcase on the floor and turned to face Amy.  His thinking was no longer clear as he put his hands on the bar on either side of her.  Then, without much more warning than that, his mouth plunged onto hers.

The Final Countdown Has Begun!

At last!  The final stretch before the release of Hell in Heels has arrived.  The official release date is April 23rd, and it will be available on most e-reader devices such as Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Kobo Reader.  Thirteen days.  It's pretty hard to believe.

I actually just finished edits on Hell in Heels last night, and you guys will never believe how that felt.  It's just unbelievable to think that it is less than two weeks away from being available for all of you to read.  I hope that all of you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

In other news, I'm hard at work on my next novel, Private Dancer.  You will meet the main characters for that book in Hell in Heels, and I think you will like them.  They are unique and the promise of it won't put you in Hell in Heels withdrawal which, I have to admit, I had a little trouble with.  Nathan and Amy are hard characters to let go of, although I'm sure you'll figure that out all on your own.  For now, I'm going to stay tight-lipped on the plot of Private Dancer, but I promise I will give all of you details soon.

There might be some more exciting news coming soon, so I will keep you all posted.

New Book By Camille Dixon

Tomorrow, my critique partner, Camille Dixon, without whom editing Hell in Heels would have been impossible, is releasing her new book, Picture Perfect.  As we traded manuscripts, I know that Camille's book is a fantastic read for anyone who loves a good love story and some killer writing.  Please check it out tomorrow on your preferred reading device.

New Updates

I have added some new features to the website, including a books page and a bonus material page.  Also be sure to take a look at the character profiles.  They will help you get to know the characters in Hell in Heels before you read the book and maybe give you more insight as to why they are the way they are.

As for the progress of Hell in Heels, this is what I can tell you.  Editor #1 read it and really liked it.  I have now passed it along to the second editor and I am crossing my fingers that she will like it.  Then, after that, I will have my most important critic read it and it is on to copyrighting then.  From there, everything will go more quickly and it won't be long before Hell in Heels will be available for all of you to read.

A quick note: Hell in Heels will be available exclusively as an e-book for Amazon Kindle.  If you do not have a Kindle, you can still access the book on the Kindle app available for all smartphones or the downloadable reader on the Amazon website.

Hell in Heels Update

I know I haven't been saying much about the process with Hell in Heels lately.  Mostly, that's because I've been crazy business working on it and the book hasn't been in my hands as of late.  Right now, it's in the hands of a professional editor who is doing the final checking.  From there, it will go to yet another proofreader and the most important critic, my mother.  I originally thought the book would be released in early March, but I'm thinking now that I spoke too soon.  Now, I'm thinking the release date will be closer to April.

Besides finishing up on Hell in Heels, I've been working on the first draft of my second book, Private Dancer.  It follows Jake Bradley and Natalie Warner, who you will meet in Hell in Heels, and I hope you will enjoy their story.

Besides being completely absorbed in writing, I've managed to get some reading done.  I'm in the middle of Sylvain Reynard's Gabriel's Inferno right now, and it's fantastic.  Plus, I had to watch the Oscars.  Always a good place for ideas...

I will keep you posted and thanks for being here.  You guys are fantastic and I'm honored to have people like you behind me.
